Ames Anderson (1934 - 2014)

NEW ULM - Ames Anderson, 80, of New Ulm died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Jeffrey Bovee officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service at church on Saturday.

Ames is survived by his wife, Ruth Anderson of New Ulm; a daughter, Greta (Steve) Nehrenberg of Kent, Wash.; twin grandsons, Dylan and Zachary Nehrenberg; a sister, Barbara (Rodger) Thuras of Bloomington; and by his cousins; niece, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ames Ekern Anderson was born Oct. 20, 1934 in St. Paul to Elmer and Mabel (Halverson) Anderson. He was a graduate of Minneapolis Southwest High School, and received his Bachelor's, Master's and his Doctorate in music from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. After he graduated from the U of M he taught music at St. Olaf College in Northfield and then at Martin Luther College in New Ulm from 1961 to 1998.

Ames was united in marriage to Ruth Vornholt on June 9, 1962 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. His career as a church organist began in his teens and continued throughout his life. Ames regularly presented recitals at Martin Luther College and throughout the Midwest. He was an avid scholar, a lover of opera, and traveled extensively.

Ames was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, American Guild of Organists, Sioux Trails Guild of Organists and the Minnesota and Brown County Historical Societies.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Martin Luther College Music Scholarship Fund, St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Ulm Medical Center Foundation or to the donor's choice.
